Quick Answer & Understanding Your Result

Source: Naval Health Research Center - Hodgdon & Beckett Body Composition Study

Your Body Fat Percentage represents the proportion of total body mass composed of adipose fat tissue relative to lean muscle, bone, and water.

US Navy Circumference Method

  • Men: Uses neck and abdomen (waist at navel) circumferences along with height.
  • Women: Uses neck, waist (narrowest point), and hip (widest point) circumferences along with height.

Healthy Body Fat Percentage Ranges (ACE Guidelines)

  • Essential Fat: 2–5% (Men) | 10–13% (Women) — required for physiological survival.
  • Athletes: 6–13% (Men) | 14–20% (Women) — peak athletic conditioning.
  • Fitness: 14–17% (Men) | 21–24% (Women) — lean, athletic lifestyle.
  • Average / Acceptable: 18–24% (Men) | 25–31% (Women) — healthy population range.
  • Obesity: 25%+ (Men) | 32%+ (Women) — elevated metabolic and cardiovascular risks.

Measure your neck, waist, and hip circumferences with a tape measure and enter the values above to calculate your exact body fat percentage.

Formula & Calculation Logic

Mathematical Formula
Mathematical Formula
Men: %BF
= 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) - 450
Women: %BF
= 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) - 450

Logarithmic formulas developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Select Biological Sex

Choose Male or Female (measurement landmarks differ).

2

Measure Circumferences

Measure neck, waist (at navel), and hips (women only) in cm or inches.

3

Input Standing Height and Weight

Enter current height and scale weight.

4

Review Body Composition Breakdown

View your body fat %, total fat mass (kg/lbs), and lean mass.
